A new record for CHER (Cheshire Historic Environment Record. The windmill is shown on Greenwood’s 1819 map as the standard windmill symbol; largely unchanged on modern OS maps. Bryant’s map of 1831 does not show it suggesting its demise. After all the timber sails in strong winds could easily break or ignite demanding the miller being near by. Of the likely hundreds of Cheshire windmills most were lost this way, their wooden or stone towers cleared, and mound erased. Of those lost or remaining there is often scant information, except for those on the Wirral, where research has uncovered detailed histories.
Aldford mill’s history is yet to be discovered. This record shows it existed even for a short time.
